Tak je to tady. Škola skončila, v kapse 750 doláčů a léto přede mnou, co jenom budu dělat? Strejda Fred říkal, že bych si prej mohl najít práci, což neni špatnej nápad, ale já přišel na něco lepšího. Jak je tady u nás v L.A. zvykem, po nocích tu mladý závoděj na ulicích. Pokud je člověk šikovnej, daj se tim vydělat slušný prachy. Těch 750 dolarů sice mělo padnout na "osobní výdaje", ale stejně tak si za ně můžu koupit třebas jetej Ford Fairlane 500 z padesátýho sedmýho a začít závodit. A když budu mít kliku, nejen že si vydělám, ale možná vyhraju i tu novou Corvettu, co v ní jezdí King. A s takovym fárem, to se pak, panečku, balej holky! Tak mě napadá, strejda Fred má dokonce garáž...
Hra Streed Rod je počinem firmy California Dreams a je v mnoha směrech unikátní. Vydaná v roce 1989, mohla se pyšnit grafikou v té době nevídanou, podle mě mnohem lepší, než měl napříkal konkurenční Test Drive. Prostředí kolem silnice je plné různých keříků, patníků, telegrafních sloupů, atd.. Skvěle vypadá i interiér auta, včetně fungujících budíků, "animované" řadící páky a dokonce dvou zpětných zrcátek. Každé z aut (je jich celkem 26) má samozřejmě jiný "kokpit" a jinak provedenou přístrojovou desku. Ale není to grafika, co hře dodnes dodává punc jedinečnosti. Oním bonbónkem a základním kamenem zároveň je herní systém. Zatímco ve většině závodních her (tehdejších i současných) si prostě vezmete auto a odjezdíte s ním pár turnajů, pak si eventuelně koupíte další, zase pár turnajů atd., ve hře Streed Rod si budete počínat trošku jinak. Svá auta totiž můžete prostřednictvím peněz vyhraných v závodech citelně vylepšovat. V praxi to vypadá tak, že zatímco např. na inzerát koupený Chevrolett z roku 1940 je osazen pouze 6-ti válcovým motorem, vy ho můžete vylepšit 8-mi válcem o obsahu 327 kubických palců, automatickou převodovku můžete vyměnit za speciální závodní, dokonce můžete sundat nárazníky, aby auto bylo lehčí, a snížit střechu, aby mělo menší odpor. Možností je nepřeberně. Třešničkou na dortu je možnost si své auto nabarvit a vyzdobit zvoleným motivem ("samolepka" na dveřích). To vše děláte v garáži, své auto máte neustále na očích a změny na něm provedené okamžitě vidíte. Jinak máte na výběr z několika grafických módů, nejlepší možný je VGA 320x200 v 16 barvách.
Tak, a je to tady, autíčko už se hřeje v garáži, je to Dodge z pětapadesátýho, stál mě 625 dolarů. Sice to nebylo žádný žihadlo, ale teď, když sem si s tim trošku pohrál... Samozřejmě sem ihned po prvnim vyhranym závodě vyměnil vyběhanej motor a nacpal sem tam novou V-8čku i s dvěma závodníma karburátorama. Automatická převodovka šla taky ven a obul sem nový gumy. Furt to ale nebylo ono, hlavně vzhledově. Tak sem sundal nárazníky a snížil střechu (to byl porod sehnat sklo...), líznul sem to tmavě červenou barvou a na bok sem si nechal nastříkat nápis "Hot Rod". Teď mi to z původních 98 mph dává 127, to de, ne?
A jak tedy vypadá vlastní herní systém? S vaším plechovým miláčkem si vyjedete k místnímu fastfoodu, kde se shromažďují vám podobná individua. Prostě jen tak stojíte a čekáte, než někdo pojede okolo. Až se k vám přiřítí někdo, kdo je hoden toho závodit s vaším nadupaným monstrem, můžete mu nabídnout typ závodu - drag race, kdy se auta postaví vedle sebe na začátek rovného úseku a na signál vyrazí nebo road race, což je v podstatě normální silniční závod. První variantu můžete jet o 10 nebo 50 dolarů (nebo se jen tak projet), druhou variantu pak o 50 nebo o 100 dolarů, nebo můžete zvolit variantu "pink slips", kdy jedete o auto. Pokud vyhrajete, soupeřova kára je vaše, pokud prohrajete, s potupou odevzdáte klíčky od auta. Vyhraná auta lze samozřejmě prodat a zlepšit tak stav svého konta. Při vlastní jízdě si musíte dát pozor na několik věcí. Pokud pojedete příliš rychle, můžou vás zastavit policajti (samozřejmě pokud vy nebudete rychlejší ;-). Pokud máte na zaplacení pokuty, je to OK, pokud ne, jdete do lochu a hra končí. Také se vám může stát, že zrušíte motor - to v případě, že ho budete příliš vytáčet. Převodovka taky nevydrží všechno, takže s citem. Pokud nějakým způsobem auto učiníte nepojízdným, ať už bouračkou nebo neopatrným zacházením, nic se neděje za předpokladu, že máte v garáži náhradní auto nebo aspoň máte peníze na to si nějaké koupit. Prostě se seberete a domů dojdete pěšky, i když ste to narvali do stromu při 130 mph :-)) Hra končí ve chvíli, kdy jak v dragu, tak v normálním závodě porazíte maníka, který si říká "The King of the Road" a jezdí se svojí blond slečnou v černý corvettě.
O grafice už jsem mluvil, o herním systému taky, takže teď ten zbytek. Hudba a zvuky jsou vyluzovány přes speeker, i přes to se vsadím, že se vám rock´n´rollové melodie budou líbit. Pokud ne, můžete je samozřejmě vypnout. Auta se na silnici chovají vcelku rozumně, i když žádný zázrak to není, na druhou stranu na hru z roku 1989. Auta samozřejmě podléhají opotřebení, takže je nutné díly občas měnit. Na závěr nezbývá než konstatovat prostě je to pecka a imho jedna z nejlepších závodních her vůbec!
Tak, a teď sem King já. Koupil sem si Thunderbirda, vytunil na maximum, dával 130 mph, a porazil toho amatéra hned v prvním závodě. Nejenže mám auto snů, Kingovu Corvettu, ale spolu s autem sem vyhrál i tu bloncku s nádhernýma nohama a velkýma... sebevědomím. Doufám, že na zadních sedadlech je dost místa...!
