Náš příběh začíná ve vzdálené galaxii, kde tři nejmocnější rody vesmíru svedou nelítostný a krvavý boj o planetu Arakis neboli Dune. Tato jediná a zároveň poslední planeta v galaxii ukrývá obrovský poklad, který může učinit z jednoho nejmocnějšího rodu, vládce galaxie. Jedná se o vzácnou surovinu zvanou Melange.
Jak jsem již zmínil, o planetu svedou nelítostný boj tři rody. Rod Atreides (modrý), patří mezi spravedlivé a poctivé, zároveň mě osobně se zdá tento rod nejmocnější. V prvních misích, které vás čekají za rod Atreides se vám může zdát obtížnost hry poněkud složitá, ale věřte, že postupem času "začne svítat" a váš rod se stane nejmocnější. Rod Atreides mají, jako každý z rodů vlastní specifické bojové jednotky nebo zbraně hromadného ničení, které budete moci stavět až v posledních misích po postavení budovy XI (výzkumné středisko) nebo Paláce. Mezi bojové jednotky rodu Atreides patří vzdušný stíhací letoun Ornithoptera a Sonic Tank. Jako jediný rod bohužel nemůže vyrábět Heavy Troopers (težkou pěchotu), proto to je zpočátku tak složité. Po postavení Paláce, což je až v posledních dvouch misích získáte bonusovou jednotku Heavy Troopers.
Rod Ordos (zelený) patří mezi obchodní velmoce tehdejší galaxie, má moc i prostředky pro boj o planetu Dune. Mezi speciální bojové jednotky patří, stejně jako u rodu Atreides, letoun Ornithoptera a Deviator. Deviator je raketový tank, který umí dočasně ovládnout jakoukoli nepřátelskou pozemní jednotku. A bonusová jednotka je Saboteur (sabotér), dokáže sabotovat každou budovu.
Rod Harkonnen (červený) je nejagresivnější rod v galaxii. Všechno řeší násilím a po zlém. Už v prvních misích mají možnost používat Heavy Troopers, rod Harkonnen ani nedokáže vyrábět Light Infantry (lehká pěchota), což vůbec není na závadu. Mezi speciální bojové jednotky patří Devastator, nejsilnější a nejodolnější tank ve hře, zároveň je nejpomalejší. Deat Hand (zbraň hromadného ničení - tzv. atomovka). Patří mezi nejobávanější zbraně. Představte si, že si postavíte základnu, poté zajistíte obranu základny, a pak začnete stavět armádu. Z ničeho nic přiletí Deat Hand a máte půlku zakladny pryč. V poslední misi za rod Atreides na vás budou posílat dva Deat Heandy zároveň, to si užijete. Velká nevýhoda Deat Handu je jeho nepřesnost, ale když se trefí na předem určené místo, tak jsou následky katastrofální.
Obecná strategie v Duně 2 (jako v každé real-time strategii) je postavit základnu, zajistit ji obranu. A začít budovat armádu, se kterou zautočíte na nepřítele a vyhrajete. A do toho všeho musíte pořád težit koření Melange.
Grafika hry byla na svou dobu poměrně vymakaná a ani v dnešní době není vůbec špatná. Zvuky a hudba taky nepatří mezi slabosti hry. Jediné co bych hře vytknul je, že nepodporuje multi-player a nemá editor map jako třeba Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness . Ale nevadí, vše co postrádam u hry Dune 2 mají její nastupci ruské nezávislé výroby Dune 3 a Dune 4.
